A Shabbat tradition is to wash the hands between the blessing over the wine and the blessing over the bread. The purpose of this washing is not for physical cleaniliness, but for spiritual purification. The words Netilat Yadaim, or washing of the hands, is engraved on this cup to facilitate the saying of the blessing and to distinguish its purpose.
